If you’re familiar with TikTok, which considering many of us were at home a lot this year, that’s probably most of us, then you’ll have seen that Instagram has released their latest ‘Reels’ feature which has a similar concept to the funny and creative app we’ve all been loving.
In this blog post I will share how to create your first reel.
Instagram Reels allow you to create short engaging videos that are fun, entertaining and creative. From a marketing standpoint, Instagram also says that Reels in Explore offers anyone the chance to become a creator and reach new audiences on a global stage.
Here’s an example of my first Instagram Reel which you can view here for inspo.
How do I use Instagram Reels?
1. First, open your Instagram stories window
2. Then, hit the ‘Reels’ function at the bottom right
If you’ve already edited your own video, you have the choice to either upload from your camera roll from the bottom image on the right, to the left of Live in the screenshot above, or you can just create one from scratch in Instagram Reels as I will describe in all these steps.
3. Next, you’ll likely want to add in a fun audio
This feature allows you to browse through the instagram music library to select an audio for your reel (providing you have music enabled on your instagram account).
You also have the option to record and upload your own original audio such as a voiceover.
4. Select the speed you want to create your video to play in
This feature allows you to select 5 different speeds with 1x being the default, normal speed in real time. The other 4 speeds allow you to either slow down or speed up the recording.
5. You have the option to choose a filter or effect
Choose from all of your favourite instagram filters to apply to your Reel plus many more cool and fun effects.
6. You can use the timer
The timer function allows you to record smaller frames within your 15 second video. This part of Reels is great if you want to make a video that’s creative and perfect for videos with transitions.
As pictured, you can also tap the ‘countdown’, this will allow either a 3 or 10 second countdown.
7. How to Record your Instagram Reel
After setting up your video with the above features, you can now record your Reel.
You can hold down the bottom middle button to instantly start recording. Remember that every time you let go of that button, you record one frame and have the option to record a number of frames up to 15 seconds. You can also use the timer feature as explained above to record these frames in hands free.
If you’re wanting to create a Reel with multiple frames in 15 seconds, you’ll see another great feature of reels is the ‘Align’ button that pops up after your first frame.
This feature allows you to align your camera in the exact position as the previous frame with a transparent image of where the previous frame ended, making it much easier to transition into your next frame.
Once you’ve finished recording your entire reel, you can view each frame by selecting the left backwards arrow. If you didn’t love how a frame or how the entire clip turned out, you have the option to delete it by selecting the small trash button.
You also have the option to trim each frame by selecting the little scissors and moving either end by sliding your finger along the bottom bar to trim the beginning or end of the frame.
When you’re happy with your entire clip, you can select the bottom right arrow to continue
8. Edit your video here
You can edit your video here with text, stickers and drawing just like in Instagram Stories. Once you’ve made any edits, you can click the right arrow again and get ready to share your first Instagram Reel.
9. Posting your Instagram Reel
First select a cover photo for your Reel from either a frame or your camera roll, then add in your caption, hashtags and tags.
Once you’re done, you can share your Reel to your Instagram feed or stories.
By sharing on your feed, you Reel will appear on a new separate Reels tab on your profile and also on your grid (unless you turn off the ‘Also share to Feed” option).
If you just want to share to your Instagram story, remember it will only appear for 24 hours just like any other Instagram story.
And that’s how you can create and share your very first Instagram Reel.
So get creating, have fun with it, and feel free to tag me so I can see your creations.
